I want to give you a clear way to handle it, as this was taught to me by a great coach.
FEAR always starts in the mind and these 3 tools below are also crucial intangibles.
Here are 3 things to cycle in your head when you start to feel the “FEAR” scenario coming on:
MOTIVATION– this is also known as the “fight or flight” reflex. Do you want to avoid the scenario by running, hiding or denying it? The option is to accept the situation, hold your ground, face it and decide to scrap it out.
Example: My father didn’t take the time to help raise me with my mom. My motivation when I had a kid early in life, was to be the role model my dad never was. 19 years later, I am still motivated to face parenthood to the best of my ability and understand that I am learning along the way.
EXPECTATION: just like motivation, there is a choice here, expecting to win or lose. Whatever the scenario, deciding on winning will ALWAYS open up more options for you to get the job done. Yes, I know depending on the scenario, the outcome is sometimes uncontrollable. But wouldn’t you rather have a WINNER’S mindset for any decisive situation. Going in with that expectation will give you the tenacity go forward.
Example: You’ve been on the a job for quite some time, working your ass off and you haven’t gotten a raise from your boss. You make the decision to ask. Would you hesitate to go running into his/her office if there was even the slightest EXPECTATION of the boss saying YES? I think NOT. You would walk right in standing tall, bright eyed and eager.
VISUALIZATION: see the scenario in your head. This is where your childhood skills will come in handy, playing out a situation by seeing what you WANT, as opposed to what you DON’T want. All great accomplishments started out as visions in someone’s mind then became a reality. We all visualize simple things everyday. Now use it for the BIG things in life.
Example: when you get dressed for a special occasion, you visualize what you are going to look like walking into this event. Then you approach your closet/clothes accordingly. You would never dress yourself blindfolded and hope for the best. You SEE what you WANT in your head, then make the decision based on motivation and expectation.
This is the proper way to battle FEAR!
